FZ2878 is a fictitious colony of freedom, at sea in international waters off the coast of the eastern United States. Created by author William S. James, it is the basis of James' first novel length offering, Freedom Zone FZ2878.

Started with a single used cruise ship, FZ2878 was taken to latitude 28N and longitude 78W, where a square mile zone of freedom was declared as a sovereign entity. Liberal minded and well funded, Randal Shotski, the zone's founder and benefactor created a place where freedom of choice was the number one priority, creating a relaxed, upscale, destination for people who want to experience total freedom and tolerance. The flagship of FZ2878, The F.S. Patrick Henry, includes an entire deck, dedicated to medical treatments and research, enabling critically ill patients to have access to the latest experimental medications available.

William S. James grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, the 3rd son and 4th child of two first-generation Greek-Americans.

"My mother was only half Greek. Her mother had been born in Pennsylvania and was of Lithuanian descent. My father was a very boisterous man of large body and large heart. He was an insurance salesman, and we did fairly well in the 60's. Very middle class."

William S. James has written professionally for the past seven years in a corporate environment. As an "Information Coordinator", James writes corporate procedures, training manuals, memos and a variety of other written and visual media for a major international corporation. In the 1980's James tried his hand at magazine writing and sold three articles to Florida Keys Magazine.

James' first novel length manuscript, Freedom Zone FZ2878, the real world, idealistic fantasy, was completed in January 2008. James envisions an FZ2878 sequel in the near to distant future.
